Detailed design and construction phase services for the new St Kilda Pier
AW Maritime was engaged by JCB Architects to complete the concept design, detailed design, tender documentation, and construction phase services for the redevelopment of Melbourne’s iconic St Kilda Pier.
The project will create an architecturally significant new public terraced seating area and a new penguin viewing boardwalk, as well a new 450mm long pier that is set to transform the area into a more welcoming and accessible destination for everyone to enjoy. The new pier design will provide improved public space for more people, improved views of St Kilda and the city skyline, better protection and viewing area for St Kilda Breakwater’s Little Penguins, a wider disability compliant walkway, new toilets, tiered seating and preservation of the heritage kiosk.
The design includes maximising off-site construction through challenging precast concrete design, and an aluminium cantilevered viewing platform that projects above an existing breakwater and that is exposed to storm events. Physical model testing and numerical modelling was undertaken to optimise the design of this challenging structure.
AW Maritime has also been engaged to support the construction phase of the project to provide technical assistance through to completion.
